We have been using the E+E Sensors in our vegetable storage system packages, and these sensors have proven to be an exceptional tool for environmental monitoring. The sensors’ accuracy and reliability in measuring temperature, humidity, and CO₂ levels have significantly improved our ability to maintain optimal conditions within the storage environment.

Common interfaces such as Modbus, analogue or digital outputs enable seamless system integration. Thanks to standardised protocols, system integrators, technicians or operators can continue using existing infrastructure and incorporate the acquired data into their control systems – without the need for additional configuration. This saves time during commissioning and makes the sensors ideal for retrofit projects in greenhouses, livestock facilities or storage units.

Humidity, dust, ammonia – agricultural processes don’t take place in cleanroom conditions and are characterised by constantly changing environments. The sensors in use must deliver accurate measurements even under the harshest conditions, without compromising on measurement precision. E+E Elektronik sensors are developed to meet demanding requirements. Their smart and robust protection concepts include:

  • Heated humidity sensors – The integrated sensor heating (High Humidity Guard) prevents condensation and ensures consistently accurate measurements, even in environments with high humidity or condensation risk. This extends sensor service life and reduces maintenance requirements.
  • IP65/IP67 enclosures and interchangeable filters– These ingress protection ratings reliably prevent dust and water intrusion, ensuring safe operation even during high-pressure cleaning or H₂O₂ sterilisation.
  • E+E sensor coating – A specially developed hygroscopic protective coating covers the active sensing element. It protects against dust, corrosion and moisture exposure, ensuring long-term stable measurement performance.
  • Innovative sensor encapsulation – A specially designed protective capsule shields the electronics from fine dust, dirt particles and chemical contaminants. This ensures reliable operation even in heavily polluted environments.

In greenhouses, livestock facilities, ripening chambers or during the storage of fruit, vegetables and grain, sensor accuracy directly impacts energy consumption and operating costs. E+E sensors offer:

  • Temperature accuracy of ±0.2 °C
  • Humidity accuracy of ±2 % RH
  • CO₂ measurement with a deviation of ±50 ppm
  • Air velocity accuracy greater than 0.1 m/s
  • Differential pressure deviation of ±1 Pa

This ensures precise climate control and reduces heating, cooling and ventilation effort to the necessary minimum. The savings potential is illustrated by the example of a large poultry house with 20,000 animals: By replacing constant fixed ventilation with demand-based, CO₂-controlled ventilation during a 90-day winter fattening period, heating costs can be reduced by approximately $100,000 – equivalent to around 30%. An effect that can be applied to many agricultural applications – wherever precise measurements enable dynamic and energy-efficient climate management.
